Things to Do on Maui, Vacation Tips

Ocean kayaking safety tips

Are looking forward to kayaking on the beautiful shores of Maui? You are in for a treat. The different shades of blues in the water, the warm temperatures, the diverse sea life, and mostly calm waters make ocean kayaking in Hawaii a great experience. Many have kayaked on a lake or river but ocean kayaking requires more safety precautions and preparations. We want you to enjoy your kayaking trip but please be safe by following these simple, yet lifesaving, tips:

1) Check the weather conditions on the side of the island you plan to kayak. Each side has its own climate especially when it comes to wind speed. It may look very calm in the morning but that could change rapidly. You really do not want to kayak in waves; it is not enjoyable and dangerous.

2) Do not kayak alone. First, it is much more fun to kayaks with friends. Second, should you run into troubles (you loose your paddle for instance), someone will be there to help you.

3) Wear a life jacket! Yes, this simple item will save your life should a wave come out of nowhere and you disconnect from your kayak.

4) Tell people where you will be kayaking and when to expect you back.

5) If your kayak has a waterproof storage compartment, bring your phone.

6) Bring plenty of water… no alcohol!!! Start your trip fully hydrating and having had a healthy meal. Bring snacks that are easy to eat while on the water. Please bring back to shore any trash such as cereal bar’s wraps.

7) Do not kayak at night. If you kayak in the late afternoon, make sure you are back on shore one hour before the sun sets.

8) Wear water shoes. Do not go bare foot as you never know where you will need to debark your kayak. Also bring a long sleeve to protect from the sun.

9) Wear sunglasses and, if you have it, use a retainer string to attach to your glasses so you do not loose them. They now make them so that they float.

10) Wear sunscreen even if you have dark skin and it is cloudy day.

Enjoy kayaking in beautiful Hawaii!
