Hawaiian Flora

Pineapple Heaven

Hawaii is known worldwide for its delicious pineapples. The climate, land, and elevation are perfect to grow this juicy tropical fruit. It is still a huge industry on the islands for local use and exports. Most of the canned pineapple sold around the world come from Hawaii! As you know pineapples can be eaten raw or cooked. They have great flavor and aroma making them a favorite for skin care.

Pineapples are not native to Hawaii; they came from South America in ships most likely in the 16th century. They are perfectly suited for long voyages at sea as they last a long time and have a tough skin for protection. They are also great to keep one healthy (great source of vitamins) and prevent diseases like scurvy.

The Hawaiian word for pineapple is hala kahiki. Hala is actually a native Hawaiian fruit that looks similar to the pineapple. Hahiki means foreign. Since they were imported, the Hawaiian name is very appropriate. For those who crave more knowledge, the pineapple’s scientific name is Ananas comosus.

When visiting Maui, there are several tours of pineapple plantations available. Those can be fun and educative at the same time… and yes you will taste fresh local pineapples. If you need a break from a day on the beach, we suggest one of those tours.

If you plan to bring pineapples back with you, make sure it is from a licensed entity and has the proper paperwork. You can’t just pick one in a field or at the market and bring it with you. They have to be agriculturally approved otherwise a custom agent will confiscate it before you make it to your plane.
